To further improve the urban road traffic environment, consolidate road traffic safety barriers and enhance refined urban governance, our city has recently fully launched the upgrading and renovation project of traffic and municipal guardrails on urban main and secondary roads, key business districts and urban and rural trunk roads. By replacing outdated facilities, upgrading protection standards, optimizing exterior designs and adopting green construction methods, the project achieves dual improvements in road traffic safety performance and urban landscape quality, safeguarding citizens’ safe and convenient travel.
It is reported that most of the original road guardrails in the city have been in service for many years. Affected by long-term exposure to sun and rain, vehicle scratches and natural aging, guardrails on some road sections suffer from rust, deformation, breakage, paint peeling and reduced collision resistance. Some old PVC guardrails have insufficient toughness and impact resistance, failing to adapt to the growing traffic flow and the passage of large vehicles. These defects not only cause potential safety hazards such as vehicle crossing, random pedestrian crossing and mixed traffic flow, but also undermine the neat appearance of urban roads, becoming a weak link in urban traffic governance.
Adhering to the principles of "safety priority, scientific quality improvement, aesthetic adaptation and green energy conservation", the renovation project is jointly planned by municipal and transportation departments through on-site surveys and precise inspections. Differentiated renovation plans are formulated according to the traffic flow characteristics, road grades and traffic scenarios of different sections to carry out categorized guardrail upgrades. In terms of material upgrading, outdated and low-quality guardrails are completely phased out. High-strength hot-dip galvanized steel guardrails are mainly installed on main roads and urban-rural trunk roads, while high-grade three-wave anti-collision guardrails are adopted on sections with heavy traffic and numerous heavy-duty vehicles. This move greatly improves collision resistance, wind resistance and corrosion resistance, effectively resisting vehicle impacts and erosion from harsh weather. The service life is more than doubled compared with traditional guardrails, perfectly adapting to the complex urban traffic environment.
In terms of functional optimization, the new guardrails adopt standardized heights and spacing to curb traffic violations such as random pedestrian road crossing and illegal U-turns and lane crossing by vehicles, effectively separating oncoming traffic and diverting pedestrians and vehicles to reduce road conflict risks. In addition, all newly installed guardrails are equipped with high-brightness reflective signs to clearly warn drivers at night, significantly improving traffic safety at night and in foggy and rainy weather and making up for road safety loopholes. For special sections such as overpasses and expressways, anti-throw nets and vertical markers are additionally installed to build an integrated safety protection system featuring "guardrails, warning signs and protective facilities", forming a three-dimensional road traffic safety barrier.
Breaking the single safety-oriented design concept, the renovation balances practicality and aesthetics to create high-quality municipal traffic facilities. Abandoning the monotonous traditional style, the new guardrails feature sleek lines and regular shapes with colors matching the overall urban road style. Cultural elements of the city are subtly integrated into landscape roads and riverside roads, turning traffic facilities from pure safety protection tools into delicate urban landscape ornaments and effectively upgrading the neatness and texture of urban roads.
To minimize the impact of construction on citizens’ travel, the construction team adopts refined construction management measures, implementing staggered and segmented construction and section-by-section acceptance while avoiding morning and evening rush hours. Standardized safety enclosures, warning signs and traffic guides are arranged at construction sites to standardize construction procedures and strictly control project quality. This ensures orderly road traffic while guaranteeing construction progress and safety, realizing coordinated progress of construction and smooth traffic. Meanwhile, adhering to green construction concepts, dismantled old guardrails are properly recycled through sorting, derusting, reinforcement and component reuse to achieve resource recycling and practice eco-friendly municipal construction.
"The new guardrails make roads neater and traffic more orderly, and the reflective signs are very eye-catching at night, bringing a stronger sense of driving safety," many citizens and vehicle owners praised the guardrail upgrading project. The brand-new and sturdy municipal guardrails not only strengthen road traffic safety defenses but also beautify urban roads, effectively improving citizens’ travel experience and sense of gain.
In the next stage, the municipal and transportation departments will further strengthen refined road maintenance and management, establish a long-term mechanism for regular inspection, maintenance and replacement of guardrails, and rectify potential safety hazards of road facilities in a timely manner. We will continue to optimize traffic facility functions and upgrade urban road landscapes, focus on citizens’ travel needs, and continuously promote the quality upgrading of municipal traffic facilities. Through refined urban governance, we will empower high-quality urban development and build a safer, smoother, more beautiful and comfortable road traffic environment for citizens.
